You’re invited to Learning Lab Wichita’s Grand Opening Celebration! Join us for a FREE, family-friendly event on Saturday, Sept. 14, at our shiny new space in historic Union Station. Enjoy hands-on learning activities, food and drink, and entertainment – but the star of the show is our state-of-the-art facility. We cannot wait to show it off.

At this come-and-go event, you will:

• Expand your perspective as you experience Learning Lab Wichita’s mission. Partake in hands-on, personalized learning activities from our education innovator partners.
• Explore our new facility, collect passport stamps, and earn a prize.
• Enjoy musical acts with an educational twist.

Morning Events
Construct- a-Cost: Blueprint to Budget Challenge
10a.m.-noon in Makerspace
Presented by Hutton
Participants will receive a simple drawing of Learning Lab Wichita and use tools to measure the building plan, determining square footage and estimating costs. Working alongside Hutton staff, students will learn to scale measurements accurately and use our estimating software to crunch the numbers. This engaging event combines practical skills with real-world applications, ensuring each child leaves not only with newfound knowledge but also special goodies!

Hip Hop Storytelling & Performance
11a.m.-noon
Presented by Devon Glover, The Sonnet Man LLC
Attendees will learn different methods of creative writing (poetry, hip-hop, storytelling, etc.) and how they can be incorporated when writing a story or play. Join THE Sonnet Man for a workshop to write your own song and performance!

All Day Events
Build Your City’s Skyline!

Presented by Alloy Architecture
In this exciting activity, you'll use LEGO bricks and everyday household materials to design and construct your very own city skyline. Think skyscrapers, parks, and unique landmarks – all brought to life with your imagination.

Design Think-Tank
10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Presented by Khan Lab School and Wichita State University College of Innovation and Design
Dive into the design thinking process at Kahn Lab School with a series of four dynamic brain games and challenges!
ONE-LINE DRAWING CHALLENGE: Each participant adds a single line to a collective drawing. Over time, patterns emerge, encouraging the group to collaboratively complete the artwork, promoting teamwork and creativity.
ALTERNATIVE USE TASKS: Presenting a board with 10 unique objects, students are tasked to envision and draw alternative uses for these items, fostering skills in ideation, critical thinking, creativity, and prototyping.
COFFEE FILTER INNOVATION: Participants transform a simple coffee filter into a novel product, enhancing their skills in ideation, innovation, and prototyping.
MASS TOAST PRODUCTION: Design a process to make toast for 100 people, illustrating the steps in a comic strip format. This activity sharpens abilities in service design thinking, understanding processes, and prototyping.

Watercolor Wonder

Dive into the vibrant world of watercolors with our Watercolor Wonder activity! Participants will use coffee filters as their canvas, allowing them to explore the fluidity and blend of colors in a fun, unique way. This activity is designed to encourage creativity and self-expression as attendees experiment with different hues and techniques to create their own watercolor masterpiece!

Children’s Business Fair

Join us for WISE's first Children's Business Fair! Some of our creative WISE entrepreneurs will have their wares on display for purchase and will be ready to talk about their business goals, creative processes, and products.

Try your hand at transforming, improving or creating a new product. Select two cards from the deck, and start innovating. How could you improve an iron? Find a new purpose for a fan? Create a new product from elements of other objects? Come play Disruptus with Empowered staff and spark your interest in disrupting the market.
